Glass Ceiling Perceptions of Women Managers And Attitudes towards Women Managers: A Research in Fınancial Services Sector
Abstract :
Glass ceiling, which reflects women employees working at lower organizational levels and being away from managerial positions while advancing in their careers, is still a remarkable topic for current organizations. This study focuses on employees and women managers working for two financial services organizations with different ownership structures. The study aims to identify the attitudes of employees towards women managers and also women managers’ glass ceiling perceptions resulting from their gender roles. The sample of the study consists of 144 employees and 36 women managers currently employed in financial services sector. As a result of the study, it was found that there is a significant difference for attitudes towards women managers according to gender (p=0,003 0,05), whereas the differences according to the education level of the employees (p=0,747 0,05) and national or foreign ownership structure of the company where they are employed (p= 0,742 0,05) were not significant. It was also found that women managers’ perception of the presence of glass ceiling was higher than their own experiences. This reveals the importance of the effect of societal factors related with gender roles, in addition to the individual and organizational factors affecting glass ceiling perception.
