The Mediating Role of Compulsory Citizenship Behavior in the Effect of Social Loafing on Organizational Cynicism: A Survey in Social Networking Groups

This study aims to identify the effect of the social loafing (SL) and compulsory citizenship behaviors (CCB) on organizational cynicism (OC). In this context, the impact of SL on OC was examined in terms of employees who are victims of loafing. Furthermore, the mediator role of CCB on OC resulting from the increased workload of the victims of SL was investigated. The sample of the study consisted of 160 participants who are the members of the social networking groups actively working in various sectors in Turkey. Correlations and a series of regression analyses were used for testing the research hypotheses. Hierarchical regression analysis was conducted based on Baron and Kenny’s three step procedures to test the mediating effect of CCB. The Sobel test was used to determine the partial mediating effect. The results showed that there was a positive relationship between OC, SL, and CCB, and CCB acted as a partial mediator between SL and OC. The results also demonstrated that different variables giving rise to cynicism are effective in organizations.
