مرکز منطقه ای اطلاع رساني علوم و فناوري - INVESTIGATING PRE-SERVICE MATHEMATICS TEACHERS’ APPROACHES OF TEACHING WITH TECHNOLOGY IN THEIR FIRST ENCOUNTERS TO CABRI GEOMETRY

Abstract :

The aim of this study is to examine the change and the development of pre-service mathematics teachers’ attitudes towards to the mathematics education with use of technology follow through an educational designing in which one of the dynamic geometry software, Cabri Geometry is used. The research design of this study is chosen as case study and the participants are 30 last year pre-service primary mathematics teachers attended 2008-2009 academic year in a university in Istanbul. This study consists of design, application and evaluation phases. In the design phase, some activities according to the principles of the mathematics education with use of technology are prepared. In the application phase, the software is presented to the participants, activities are applied and finally they are asked to prepare some activities. The data of the study is gathered from questionnaires, observations and document examination. In the evaluation phase, the data is interpreted qualitatively. The analysis of the data before the application shows that the approaches of the participants are positive towards the education with the use of technology but their level in this kind of education is very low. Furthermore, they claim that it is hard to use the technology in ordinary mathematic classes because of some reservations. After the application of educational designing with Cabri Geometry, their attitudes towards to the use of technology in mathematics education are changed positively and their reservations about the use of technology in classes are significantly decreased.
