The effect of cognitive-behavioral group counseling on test anxiety of eight-grade elementary school students
Abstract :
The purpose of the study is to examine whether cognitive-behavioral theraphy (CBT) delivered in the group format, reduces test anxiety level of students. Pre-test and post-test control group quasi-experimental design was used as a method in the study. Research group was composed of 8th grade students attending an Elementary School in the city of Istanbul. The experimental group consisted of 15 participants and control group also consisted of 15 participants. Groups were randomly assigned as experimental or control groups. Friedben test anxiety scale was used as an instrument to measure the test anxiety levels. Eight-session group counseling which utilizes CBT, which lasted approximately 90 minute was applied to experimental group, wheras any application was not made for control group. Mann-Withney U test was used to analyse the data obtained to compare the pre-test and post-test scores of experimental and control groups. Wilcoxon signedrank test was used to analyse the data obtained to compare the pre-test and post-test scores of experimental groups. The results of the study show that CBT delivered in the group format was effective in reducing test anxiety levels of students
