Using digital storytelling in foreign language speaking education
Abstract :
Speaking is considered as an important, but also a difficult skill to gain in foreign language. Forthis reason, various methods and techniques are applied in speaking education. This study deals with “speaking” dimension of foreign language education within the scope of digital storytellingmethod in which sound and video are combined to create an effective content by users themselves.In this study, case study, one of qualitative research methods, was used. Within this context,the sample consisted of 41 preparatory students in School of Foreign Language in KaradenizTechnical University in 2014-2015 Spring semester. During seven weeks in the study process, thestudents were trained about preparing digital stories. After this training, they created their owndigital stories. The research findings indicated that digital storytelling method positively affectedretention of learning and that provided an opportunity for self-expression of students, who do notlike to make presentations in the classroom, more easily and comfortably. In addition, the use ofdigital stories in speaking education was founded as entertaining and motivating by the students.Some students expressed that digital storytelling method can prevent spontaneous speaking.In future research, digital storytelling method can be applied in other language courses such asreading and listening.
