The Factors Affecting Choice of Tutor When Receiving Support from Private Lessons
Abstract :
The aim of this qualitative research is to determine students’ preference for private tutors. The research is important in terms of revealing the factors that affect the preference for teachers. The study uses a case design and has determined the study group using the maximum diversity method for purposive sampling. Data have been collected from the study group, which consists of 17 teachers, 24 students, and four parents. The interviews use a semi-structured interview form prepared by the researcher with the help of expert opinions. Research data have been analyzed using the method of content analysis. In each stage of the study, the findings have been helically checked to provide originality, creating a rich data source. The themes reached by analyzing this data source have been presented from a logical perspective in the form of tables under the headings of private tutors’ personal characteristics, vocational characteristics of private tutors and other factors affecting the choice of private tutors. The findings have been interpreted and supported with direct quotes. According to the findings, private tutors are expected to provide appropriate strategies, methods, and techniques that take individual differences into account, to keep students active in the course, to create learning environments that use feedback and evaluation effectively, and to guide students in this context. In addition to the teacher having experience in private lessons, other qualifications when choosing a private tutor include the tutor being known and reliable.
