EXPERIENCES OF RELATIVES OF PATIENTS RECEIVING CHEMOTHERAPY: A QUALITATIVE STUDY
Abstract :
Objective: The aim of the study was to determine and reveal problems and experiences encountered by relatives of cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Methods: This qualitative study was conducted on relatives of patients treated at Istanbul GATA Haydarpaşa Teaching Hospital, Oncology Department, Outpatient Chemotherapy Unit between the dates of May 16th and June 10th, 2011. “Purposive sampling” method among nonprobability sampling methods was used for selecting patient relatives to participate in focus group discussions. Focus group discussions were conducted with groups of 6 to 8. Thirty two patient relatives in total were interviewed as a result of five focus group discussions. At the first stage of data analysis, all discussions recorded on the tape recorder were transcribed word by word. Then transcribed texts were evaluated by utilizing observation notes taken during focus group discussions. Results: Eight themes were found out as a result of focus group discussions conducted with patient relatives in this study. These themes were cancer perception, remarks and changes regarding their physical condition, exhaustion and guilt, family and social relations, economic insufficiencies, changes in the working life, and future expectations. Conclusion: As a result of this study, it was seen that in addition to cancer patients also their relatives’ physical and emotional conditions, social and family relations, working lives, and economic conditions were affected by cancer.
