EXAMINATION AND COMPARISON OF FOOT CARE BEHAVIORS OF INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE TYPE 2 DIABETES
Abstract :
Purpose: This study was maden for the examination of diabetes mellitus individuals who have diabetic foot and non-diabetic foot. Method: Datas had been collected in an University Hospital’s endocrinology department in Izmir, during the June-August 2008. Sample of study includes 68 diabetic foots individuals, 70 nondiabetic individuals, totally 138 types individuals who have type II diabetes. Datas were collected by a form which includes the social-demographic features and foot care behaviors; it was evaluated with chi-square, yatest and t test. Results: It was determined that foot care score is more in individulas who have non-diabetic foots than individuals who have diabetic foots (p 0.05). Between the foot care behaviors; controlling the foots’ injuries everyday, drying after washing, wetting, nail care, controlling the shoes before the wearing for any unknown object and wearing suitable shoes behaviors were less in the individuals who have diabetic foots than the individuals who have non-diabetic foots (p 0.05).Standing to apply to medical personel when calluses, check-up for foots regularly, to exarcise and buying shoes in the afternoon behaviors were poorly applied in both two groups. Conclusions: In this study, especially some behaviors were found to be important in preventing diabetic foot. It is offered that the researching of the reasons of non-applying foot care baheviors who have diabetes.
