Abstract :
Cigarette smoking is one of the most important health problems in the world. Active and passive tobacco smoke exposures during pregnancy may cause maternal, fetal, and infant morbidity and mortality and this is preventable risk factor. Objective: This research was carried out to determine the factors affecting smoker women to continue smoking after pregnancy. Methods: The research was conducted among pregnant women with smoking habit before pregnancy who applied to pregnancy clinics of Izmir Ege Maternity and Gynecology Training and Research Hospital and Izmir Dr Ekrem Hayri Üstündağ Obstetric and Gynecology Hospital. Research sample was composed of 173 volunteered pregnant women with smoking habit before pregnancy. The information was gathered with self-report by means of a questionnaire which had been conceived by the researchers in accordance with the literature. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences for Windows (SPSS for Windows, Client Version 11.0). Descriptive statistics were used to summarize data, and Chi-squared test was used to compare the variables. Results: It was determined that the average age of pregnant women was 26.12. The participants were 35.3% first pregnancy, 44.5% smoker for 1 to 5 years. The participants were 15.6% quitted after pregnancy, 15.6% were passive smokers and 68.8% continued smoking after pregnancy. It was determined to be statistically significant that pregnant women’s educational background, being warned about smoking during pregnancy, smoking condition during previous pregnancies, relationship with her husband affect continuing smoking after pregnancy (p 0.05). Conclusion: As a result of this research, it was determined that most of smoker women continue smoking after pregnancy. In this context, early assessment of health care professionals, especially in smokers pregnant women, smoking cessation counseling can do, and if necessary smoking cessation centers is recommended.
