DETERMINATION OF COURSE LOADS OF COURSES TEACHING IN BACHELORATE PROGRAMME OF MIDWIFERY: A DESCRIPTIVE STUDY
Abstract :
Objective: The purpose of this study was to determinate the work loads of courses teaching in the Bachelorate Programme of Midwifery, Aydin School of Health, Adnan Menderes University. Materials and Methods: This descriptive study was conducted with 625 students selected with non-probability method, in 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 academic periods, Adnan Menderes University, Aydin School of Health, Bachelorate Programme of Midwifery. Research data were collected with a questionnaire prepared by Bologna Commission of Aydin School of Health, based on self-declarations of students. Data were analysed with the average time spent by students for the each course and the activities of courses. Results: It was determined that the first year students spent the most time for Midwifery Basic Principles and Applications I Course and the least time for Turkish Language I Course in the fall semester; in the spring semester, also, the most time for Basic Principles and Applications II Course, and the least time for Basic Information Technology Course. It was founded that the second year students spent the most time for the Normal Pregnancy Course and the least time for Sociology of Health Course in the fall semester; the most time for High Risk Pregnancy Course and the least time for Pathology Course in the spring semester. The third year students reported that they reserved the most time for Normal Birth and Postpartum Period Course and the least time for Vocational English I and Medical Genetics Courses in the fall semester, the most time for High Risk Birth and Postpartum Period, and the least time for First Aid Course in the spring semester. It was observed that the fourth year students reserved the most time for Maternal and Child Health Course and the least time for Health Statistics and Computer Applications Course in the fall semester, the most time for Integrated Practice in Clinic and Field Course and the least time for History of Midwifery and Professional Ethics Course in the spring semester. Conclusion: In this study, it was concluded that the work loads of courses teaching in programme of midwifery in the Bachelorate Programme of Midwifery, Aydin School of Health, Adnan Menderes University concentrated to vocational courses and students spent time as focused mid-term and final exams the time. In addition, course loads of students belonging to the national credit of courses in the curriculum were found to be equivalent to standards of the Bologna Process.
