Abstract :
This descriptive study was carried out to determine patients’ views on male nurses. Two hundred thirtheen volunteer patients who had been hospitalized in surgical units of an education and research hospital in western Turkey in between 15.06.2010 and 30.07.2010 were the study sample. Data were collected using an questionnaire including questions related to descriptive characteristics and views on male nurses of the patients. Chi-square test was used to analyze the data. Of the patients 50.7% were female with a mean age of 49.30±18.22 years, 53.5% were graduated from primary school, 59.6% were hospitalized in surgical units, 56.8% had lived in a big city during most of their lives, and 30% were cared by male nurses. Most of the patients (82.2%) stated that they agreed on being a male nurse, and 69% indicated that they were willing to receive care from a male nurse of the patients 76.5% reported that male nurses could give better care. Of the patients in 35-54 age group, 52% patients agreed on view There re male nurses working in working in Turkish Hospitals, and 37% agreed on the idea Male nurses attitudes towards patients are more gentle and more tolerant than female ones. The rate of female patients who agreed on the views Female nurses give good care, It is hard to Express myself to female nurse, when I face a problem and Male nurses behave patients more gently and more tolerantly than female nurses was higher than the rate of male patients. Patients who experienced hospitalization before were found to support the idea Men can also work as a nurse constituted the highest percentage. The idea I wish my son would be a nurse was supported by the patients in 35-54 age group and self employment.
