Abstract :
Objective: Health care workers are at risk of being infected with diseases transmitted withblood-borne diseases by occupational exposure to body fluids. The aim of this prospective anddescriptive study was done in order to examine the prevalence and determinants of cuttingpenetratinginjuries.Methods: The population of the study was consisted of nurses who work in clinics (N = 130) ofAdnan Menderes University Hospital. The sample of the study was consisted of 121 nurses workingin clinics in the hospital between the dates 01/03/2009 and 30/06/2010.Results: Overall the 59.5 of nurses were married, 52.1% of them had graduates from bachelor sor master s degree, 70.2% of them were worked in internal diseases units, 91.7% of them had builtthe hepatitis B vaccine, 75.2% of the were exposed to stab wounds, 90.9% of them had been givecare to patient with blood-borne infection. When caring for patients with blood-borne infection,80.2% of all nurses were stated that they have been used disposable gloves, 57% of them have beenwearing a mask, 35.5% of them have been wearing protective clothing. For preventing injury fromthe needle, 66.9% of nurses stated that they throw the needle to waste container disconnecting theinjector needle, 57.9% of them that spent the needle sheaths by pick up it, because of the wastecontainer is not in an accessible location.Conclusion: The majority of nurses working in the hospital was found to be exposed to patientswith blood-borne infection, and they were more frequently exposed to stab wounds during thenight shift.The number of nurses working during the night should be increase, nurses must performinvasive procedures with wearing the appropriate size gloves on their hands. Infection controlcommittees should protect the health of health care workers by providing uninterrupted service.
