Abstract :
Objective: The aim of this study was to identify the relationship between the sociodemographicalproperties and health beliefs of the patients with diabetes mellitus.Methods: This research was performed as a descriptive study. Data was obtained by using theHealth Belief Model Scale and patient information form containing the socio-demographicalproperties in the patients with diabetes mellitus. The study was conducted between January 1 andApril 30, 2012. Participants were the outpatients who accepted to participate in the research inDiabetes Polyclinic Gulhane Military Medical Academy. In the statistical analysis, One SampleKolmogorov Smirnov test was used for compatible data in the normal range. Relationship betweendependent and independent variables was compared with Mann-Whitney U Test and KruskalWallis Test for incompatible data in the normal range. In order to identify the relationship betweenscale scores and the nominal variables, spearman correlation analysis was used.Results: The mean ages of the participants are 56.68± 14.03, 50.0% of them are female, 72.8%of them are married and 48.9% of them have the education of 8 years and under this level. It hasbeen determined that the mean diabetes diagnosis durations of the patients were 10.93±7.86, and56.7% o f them were used insulin, and 28.9% o f them had a bad adaptation for the treatment. In thestudy it was determined that there were statically significant differences between the Health BeliefModel Scale and subscales of the individuals with diabetes mellitus and the gender, marital status,living downtown, the usage of insulin treatment, the perception of socioeconomically status andthe level of education (p 0.05). In addition, it has been determined that those patients who weremiddle aged and over, females, married, living in the city center, having high education levels, higheconomic status and use insulin therapy have high adaptation levels for the treatment, perceivetheir illness seriously and find the recommendations beneficial and obscure perceptions is at thelow level in the applicationsConclusion: It may be effective to determine patients’ health beliefs and to apply appropriatetraining programs for the treatment and adaptations o f diabetes care and prevention of long-termcomplications.
