SLEEP PROBLEMS AND ECOLOGICAL FACTORS OF SLEEP IN THE FIRST THREE YEARS OF LIFE
Abstract :
Objective: Descriptive field study was planned to investigate the sleep problems and ecologtcal factors of sleepin the first three years.Method: Mothers (385), who have 0-36 month infant/todlers and applied to healthy child outpatient deparment of a children hospital in izmir between September 20 7 7 and February 20 72, were included in the study. Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire (BJSQ) was used to collect data and assess the sleep problems in infants/todlers. BISQ was developed by Sadeh (2004) and later it was expanded by Sadeh eta/. in 2009 and adopted to Turkish language by Taldemir and Baytk. In evaluating the data, SPSS 16.0packet program, Chi square tests were used.Result: Mean age of the infants /todlers was lS± 1.61 months. When the seven parameters of sleep level measurement were examined; among the infants!todlers, beginning of sleep time was 22.30, mean of wake up times at a night, was 2.0, the mean of sleeplessness duration was 0.50 minutes among children. Mean of uninterrupted sleep duration was 4 hours, mean of sleep during daytime was 2.33 hours. ;lnfants!todlers have a total sleep of 17.32±3.0 hours. It was determined that %28.S of the children had sleep problems and 46.2 % of mothers perceived sleep problems for their children. Sleep problems were more prevalant in infants /todlers whose mothers were in 15- 24 aged old comparing to other groups as well ( p .05). That decreased the number of children of mothers, sleep problems of their infants I todlers increased (p .OS). lnfants!todlers who lied infacedown position during sleep, have sleep problems more than the others ( p .05). Among theinfants!todlers whose mothers perceived that their children have severe sleep problems, sleep problems were found more prevalont ( p .OS).Conclusion:. Mothers perceived sleep problems for their children was higher than the prevalance determined by using BISQ . Young mothers infants!todlers experienced more sleep problems. Sleep problems was more prevalont in infants and among the children who hove mothers that has one child and stayed in younger ages, who sleep in facedown position. Nurses and physiciaas were suggested that they should determine the sleep problems and effective ecologtcol factors on sleep among children/infants as well as provide counseling and health education for the mothers.
