APPROACHS OF NURSES TOWARDS STANDARDS OF PRACTICE FOR CULTURALLY COMPETENT CARE
Abstract :
Objective: This study was performed to determine the approachs of nurses towards Standardsof Practice For Culturally Competent Care.Method: This descriptive study was conducted in two hospitals located at the city center. The study population consisted of 391 nurses who were on duty in State and University hospitals. Sample selection from study population was not performed. One hundred and forty two (36%) nurses that could be reached, who volunteered for participation in the study were enrolled in the study. Data were collected between March 2012 and October 2013 by face to face interview, making use of a questionnaire. The questionnaire was prepared according to Standards of Practice For Culturally Competent Nursing Care that was developed by Douglas eta/. Data were analyzed by calculating percentage and mean values in computer environment using SPSS 15 statistics software.Results: The most adopted standards among Standards of Practice For Culturally Competent Nursing Care by the nurses were social justice (17.5%), transcultural nursing knowledge (73.2%), and cross cultural communication (71.8%); and the least adopted standards were critical reflection (49.3%), evidence-based practice and research (51.4%), and cross cultural leadership (52.8%).Conclusion: It could be interpreted as an unfavorable result that the nurses did not completely adopt the standards for culturally competent care. According to the results of this study, it is suggested that educational courses be organized such as lectures, scientific activities, and in service training that will bring the nurses in cultural competency before and after their graduation.
