Abstract :

Objective: This study was carried out in order to identify the knowledge of nurses working in clinics about child abuse and neglect. Methods: The sample of this research s descriptive cross-sectional constitutes 112 nurses who work in clinical care given to pediatric patients in two hospitals in Sanliurfa. Data on socio demographic characteristics were collected by questionnaire and Symptoms and Risk of Child Abuse and Neglect Diagnostic Scale number using SPSS program was evaluated by percentage distribution and chi-square testResults: The mean age of the nurses was 26.91 ± 5:43. 62.5% of nurses hadn t received any training in child neglect and abuse, 87.5% of them indicated that they need training in this regard. 47.3% of nurses reported that they considered themselves poor in determining the child abuse and neglect.Nurses average scores taken from the total scale for risk about symptoms of child abuse and neglect are 3:31 ± 0.55. When the mean scores obtained from subscales are examined; abuse and physical signs of neglect in children are 3.28 ± 0.55, evidence of neglect is 2:44 ± 0.71, abuse and behavioral symptoms in neglect of the child are 2.99 ± 0.51, parental characteristics prone to abuse and neglect are 3.39 ± 0.69,the children characteristics prone to abuse and neglect are 4.95 ± 0.1, and the family characteristics on child abuse and neglect are found to be 2.82 ± 0.76.Conclusion: The knowledge for the recognition of the nurses working in child abuse and neglect and the risk of symptoms was inadequate. Especially trainings to recognize the symptoms and risks should be given to the nurses working in clinical child abuse and neglect.
