Abstract :
Nowadays people are always in intercultural communication because of the reality of 21st century (either directly or indirectly in internet). It ıs a usual situation that can be faced lifelong. It is obvious that stereotypes have some negative effects on intercultural communication. Stereotypes, which are used in daily life, prevent intercultural communication by discrimination, affect the quality of communication. Because stereotypes have got over generalizations and have got lack of communication, individualization is not considered at all. In stereotypes, all the miscommunications, prejudices and even discriminations can harm the individual’s sensations and effective communication. The fact that in intercultural communication, an individual who has stereotypes and prejudices against the person who is in another social group has got negative stereotypes towards the people around him means he is not ready to have a relation with the mentioned people. This situation prevents intercultural communication mostly. Nowadays, there are lots of possibilities of intercultural education (like Erasmus) for university students, master’s education, and doctoral education. The students in Cumhuriyet University have a chance to be in intercultural setting (sometimes in Germany). Therefore, our aim is to find the stereotypes of the students (of the departments of German Language and Literature, English Language and Literature, Turkish Language and Literature, History in the Faculty of Letters of Cumhuriyet University) against the German people. The present study has a descriptive survey model, and is a qualitative research. 139 4th year students of the above mentioned departments participated in the experiment group. There was 37 pair of adjective in the questionnaire form. As a result, most of 139 participants (who are university students as mentioned above) signed positive adjectives against the German people
