Abstract :
Purpose: To evaluate the diffusion volume of articaine solution in vivo with magnetic resonance imaging. The affects of epinephrine concentration and the site of injection on diffusion volume of articaine have been also evaluated. Material and Methods: Thirty volunteers received bilateral maxillary buccal supraperiosteal injections with 4% articaine with 1:100.000 epinephrine (1.7 ml) and 4% articaine with 1:200.000 epinephrine (1.7 ml) to first premolar teeth (15 volunteer) or to first molar teeth (15 volunteer). MR images were obtained before and 5 minutes after local anesthetic injections. Volumetric estimation of the diffused local anesthetic solution was calculated by the planimetry method and the Cavalieri principle. Data were analyzed by Student’s t test. Results: Mean diffusion volume of articaine was 3.23 cm3. The effect of epinephrine concentration and the injection location on diffusion volume was not statistically significant (P 0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study showed that articaine can diffuse nearly double to initial injected volume in a 5 minute waiting period.
