Abstract :
Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the appropriate patient approach by evaluating the anxiety degree of dental patients before periodontal therapy in the light of demographic-periodontal data and patient complaints. Materials and Methods: This study was carried on 365 patients who were referred to Gaziantep University Faculty of Dentistry Periodontology Department. Sociodemographic-periodontal data, and patient complaints were recorded. In order to evaluate the anxiety levels Spielberger s State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) questionnaires were completed by the patients while waiting for their treatments. Results: The analysis have revealed that there were no statistically significant differences on stateanxiety levels related to gender, age, education level, maritial status, income, smoking, periodontal status, toothbrushing habit and patient complaints (bleeding, oral malodour, tooth mobility, aesthetic problems). The only parameter effective on stateanxiety levels was the presence of periodontal abcess. Education level, maritial status and place of residence were effective on trait-anxiety levels. Conclusions: It can be concluded that the effect of gender, age, socioeconomic and periodontal status on state-anxiety levels is limited. The presence of periodontal abcess is the only parameter effective on state anxiety. The role of patient dependent factors particularly anxiety on the success of dental treatments must be beter recognised by the clinicians and patient approaches should be formed by considering these factors.
