What is platform switch concept?

The long term success of implant depends on the stability of bone support for the implant. It was thought that the concept of platform switching, effects the crestal bone preservation. The literature dealing with the platform switching concept was assessed on Pubmed and Google Scholar data base. Manuscripts were evaluated according to three main topic (biomechanical behavior, crestal bone level, soft tissue level). Besides the studies showing that platform switching reduces the crestal bone loss and maintains more esthetic results, there are also some studies showing that platform switching has no effect on esthetics and bone level. Long term randomized clinical trials should be required.
