Abstract :
Objectives: The objective of this study is to assess the prevalence of halitosis in patients who referred to the Near East University, Faculty of Dentistry and analyze the association of halitosis with age, gender, education level and smoking. Materials and Methods: The study included a total of 612 healthy subjects (298 female, 314 male) ranging in age from 20 to 80 (mean age; 39.07 + 14.79). Halitosis assessment will be carried out by organoleptic measurements and portable sulphide monitor (Halimeter®). Student s t-test, ANOVA and Pearson s correlation analysis are used for statistical analysis. Results: In all subjects, the prevalence of halitosis was 51.9% for Organoleptic Score (OS) (OS ≥2) and 54.8% for VSC (VSC ≥110 ppb) values. There was positive and statistically significant correlation between VSC values and OS measurements [(r:0.82), (p 0.05)]. Statistically significant correlation was found between OS-VSC values with age and education level (p 0.05). OS and VSC values increased with the amount of smoking were only significantly associated with OS values (pos 0.05). There was no relation between OS-VSC values and gender (p 0.05). Conclusions: The prevalence of halitosis was found 54.08%. Organoleptic scoring is a reliable method for the determination of halitosis. The prevalence of halitosis, increases with the age and decreases with the increased level of education. Smoking causes bad breath and increased use of these products causes an increase in halitosis.
