Abstract :
In this work, Istanbul s daily life, physical, symbolical and metaphorical structures mental map has been brought into light with examples from gravures from the 17th and 18th century. İn the period of the Ottoman Empire, the artists have depicted the cultural codes with symbols. However, each artist has developed his own style of gravures with his own cultural background and knowledge collateral with their interests. This situation causes differences not only as manner also in urban definition at the engravings which are carrying facts of reality documentations. İstanbul Urban engravings documents the history in which it is made. This engravings show traces of previous history ,and also leave today clues of a number of cultural codes. İf we look today, this historical documents not only give us information about urban symbolics, monuments or natural environment. also gives us clues about social life, traditions and culture. At the Orientalist period in which Engraving are used extensively, Istanbul engravings reviewed by Western vision, has been an effective method to reflect the city’s soul, to display collective memory and to reveal the unknown. Comments on this study and issued mental maps are made with today s perspective on samples in which mostly Bosphorus is approached.
