Selection of Native Walnuts (Juglans regia L.) in Mazıdağı (Mardin)

This study was carried out to select promising walnut genotypes during the two years in Mazıdagı district, and to describe their tree and fruit traits. In the first step, 65 genotypes were selected from about 500 seedling walnut trees, and their fruit samples were collected. Among these seedling genotypes, 8 walnut genotypes were evaluated as promising. Promising genotypes averagely had fruit weight of 14.55–10.28 g, fruit length of 42.02–35.64 mm, fruit width of 34.46–29.78 mm, shell thickness of 1.90–1.27 mm, kernel weight of 7.22–5.55 g and kernel ratio of 63.10- 43.58%. In addition, their flowering habits were protandrous for 6 genotypes, protogynous for one genotype and homogamous for one genotype.
