The Effects of Different Phosphorous and Nitrogen Doses on the Yield and Quality of Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) in Van Ecological Conditions

Abstract :
This study was aimed to determine the effect, of four doses of nitrogen (0, 30, 60 and 90 kg ha^-1) and two doses of phosphorus (0 and 40 kg ha^-1) fertilizers application on fennel yield and quality characteristics in Van ecological conditions during 2006 and 2007 years. Field trials were arranged in Completely Randomized Block Designed with three replications in the experimental fields of Agricultural Faculty of Yuzuncu Yıl University. In this study, plant height (cm), the number of main branches (branches plant^-1), the number of umbrella (umbrella plant^-1), the number of seeds in the umbrella (seeds umbrella^-1), thousand seed weight (g), seed yield (kg ha^-1), seed essential oil content (%), seed fatty oil content (%) fennel were investigated. At the end of the study, plant height, number of main branches, number of umbrellas, the number of seeds in the umbrella, seed yield and seed fatty oil content were significantly affected by varying nitrogen doses. However, the number of umbrellas and seed yield significantly increased with different phosphorus dose applications. The highest seed yields (679 and 474 kg ha^-1) were obtained from 40 kg ha^-1 phosphate fertilizer application in both experimental years. Apart from phosphate applications, nitrogenous fertilization gave different results. The highest seed yields were obtained from 90 kg N ha^-1 (733 kg ha^-1) and 60 kg N ha^-1 ( 506 kg ha^-1) in the experimental years, respectively.
