Abstract :
The aim of this study was to determine suitable cotton varieties grown as second crop wheatcotton growing system under the Şanlıurfa Harran Plain conditions. The experiments were conducted on the experimental area of Agricultural Faculty of Harran University at Eyyubiye Campus in 2013 and 2014. Seed of cotton cultivars were sown with the randomize complete block experimental design with the three replications. Thirteen cotton varieties (Stoneville 373, Stoneville 468, ADNP-01, Gaia, Fantom, Elsa, Gloria, Candia, DP 396, DP 499, Claudia, Flash and BA 119) were used as plant material. Experimental plots were consisted of six rows with 10 m in length; row spacing and intrarow spacing were 70 cm and 20 cm, respectively. At the result of the study, Fantom and Stoneville 468 varieties for seed cotton yield, first harvest ratio and number of boll per plant; DP 499 and Gloria varieties for plant height; Fantom, Elsa and Gloria varieties for sympodia; DP 499, Flash and ADNP-01 varieties for seed cotton weight per boll; Stoneville 373 variety for seed index; Claudia and Stoneville 468 varieties for ginning outturn; Gloria and Gaia varieties for fiber length; Gloria and Candia varieties for fiber fineness and fiber strength had superior characteristics compared to the other cultivars. On the other hand, significant differences weren’t found among cotton varieties for fiber uniformity. In the second crop farming of cotton, which is dependent on precipitation occurs in early autumn, and therefore early Fantom and early-mid Stoneville 468 cotton varieties should be preferred.
