WOODEN CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES OF XIX. CENTURY AYVALIK CHURCHES
Abstract :
19th century Greek Orthodox churches in Ayvalık, around which the neighborhoods are shaped, are significant elements of historical structure of the city. They also occupy a significant position in the city silhouette with their size, height and form. The structural system of these churches are especially significant as rare examples of detailed wooden construction methods representing the period’s technical knowledge and skill as well as aesthetic taste. Today, some of these churches are in danger of extinction because of the damages caused by environmental conditions as well as neglect and abuse by humans. This study examined the wooden construction methods of the churches in Ayvalık. This research focusing on the wooden workmanship in Ayvalık churches will expand the literature about these churches and the results are expected to be of value for future renovation and restoration projects of these churches.
