The Construction Process of Hırka-i Şerif Mosque after 1847 in the Light of Archive Documents

Abstract :
Hırka-i Şerif Mosque was primarily built for housing and visiting for the Hırka-i Şerif which was entrusted from the Prophet Muhammad to Veysel Karanî (Uveys-el Karanî) at 18th century. The Mosque which was devastated at 1847,was restored due to the Sultan Abdülmecit’s request between the years 1848-1851 by the chief Architect Seyyid Abdülhalim Efendi. The new mosque which was designed as both a place of pilgrimage and worship is a stone structure that was created with the sanctuary planned octagonal, the cardigan apartment adjacent to the south of the sanctuary, the down stair in the north for the last community and the upstairs for the Sultan’s apartment. The connection between Cardigan’s apartment and Sultan’s apartment was provided by the duplex visiting galleries which were surrounded on both sides. In this study, the building process of Hırka-i Şerif Mosque after 1847 has been dealt. In this context, exploration and construction notebooks have been examined in detail and the materials used in construction, their costs, wages paid to workers, progress of the construction and repairs of the building has been evaluated.
