Abstract :
Postmodern art movements first began in America and in some European countries in the 1960s as a result of the process in which the artist, using subjective ideas affected by the great social events of the day, begins to reflect personal ideas in their works. The object of art, having gone through many changes throughout the history of art, is considered together installations combined with place and the painting freed itself from flat surface in the postmodern era. In this respect, concept of place is aimed to analyze different perspectives and their relationship with the art object is made clear with examples. The two Turkish artists considered in this study are Hale Tenger and Ayşe Erkmen. Both artists used place as the primary element in their works, but they utilize the space by the means of building new context. In these contexts, Erkmen mentioned the sociological issues by the public spaces turning into the art objects and benefited from the sociologic historical information. On the other hand Tenger gained an advantage by using subjective historical information such as controversies like male-female, death-life and inside-outside. She preferred to attract and shock people by using scent, light and motion of the space and adding these effects to create meaning. It can be said that the main results that are related to art in postmodern era such as subjectivity, using subjective historical items, cultural data and historicity, occurred in Turkish Art. To summarize the paradoxical structure of postmodern art can be seen in historicity and eclecticism of artworks, of being an artist as a micro discourse and on finding a place of subjective values in societies. In the context of art, artist and society, traces of postmodernism via artworks can be more visible and comprehendible.
