Abstract :
The aim of this study is to examine the image of eye/eyes in Paul Verlaine’s poems, who is one of the major poets of current symbolism. The data of the research are composed of the context which includes the word eye in the whole poems of the poet. Content analysis and qualitative research method were used as the research method based on empathy by treating the eyes being the eyesight which is prominent among the five senses and the contexts of the other words in the lexical field of this word. Semantic and descriptive evaluations are made by scanning all of the Verlaine’s poems, by taking into account the verses related to the eye and the eyes. The metaphors made by the word eye, and the reason why this word is used so often in semantic dimension generally have been tried to determine. It has been emphasized that the eyes in the pattern of verse of the poems bring how a new dimension to the poems. It was observed that this image was used intensively in his poems, numerically seventy times. In a sense, he reflects everything that is perceived by the eyesight to his poem. It was determined that the verbs which can be found in the word field of the eyes such as, cry, laugh, look, see; the elements of description such as, laughing, smiling, crying, sarcastic, beautiful, bad accompany to the eyes in the contexts.
