Developmentalist State as an Institutional Construct: A Historical and Theoretical Critique

The concept of developmental state is based on the institutionalist argument that those states with strong institutional capacities and high degrees of autonomy from various sections of society, can succeed in reaching economic developmental goals. This paper evaluates the concept of developmental state in historical and theoretical terms. It discusses the “comparative historical institutionalist” approach to the concept of developmentalist state, and its Marxist critiques. It argues that bringing capital back into the analyses is not enough for overcoming the limitations of state- centered ap-proaches. Instead, the totality of social relations of productions should be brought back in.
