Abstract
The aims of this study are to compare highway and railway transport systems in the context of energy consumption, and using scenario approach to exhibit energy savings generated by shifting long-distance transport from highways to railways. The obtained values of energy intensity shows that in terms of energy consumption there is not much difference between highway and railway in passenger transport, but highway consumes approximately 3,6 times energy in freight transport. Assessed scenarios show that significant energy savings, amounts ranging between 3.99 MTEP and 11.82 MTEP, can be achieved by increasing the share of railways and reducing the share of roads in freight transport.
