Abstract
This article problematizes the paradox that nowadays democracy as a form of government has become widespread however simultaneously democratic spirit has been diminishing. It is argued that democracies need democratic and autonomous individuals. For this reason Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s Emile or on Education is analyzed. Rousseau’s Emile is bound up in freedom and equality. He is an autonomous individual who knows that dominating others is as bad as being dominated. These qualities are concretization of the proper principles for raising individuals in democratic societies. Reconsideration of Rousseau’s democratic suggestions in Emile that combine the public and the private seems essential for making democracy strong and permanent.
