THE RELATIONSHIP IN HIGH SCHOOLS BETWEEN SCHOOL CULTURE AND STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
Abstract :
The purpose of this study was to investigate relationships between school cultures and student achievement, in high schools. The study is in the survey model. The data about school culture were obtained using School Culture Survey (SCS) applied in 2007-2008 academic year, in 21 high schools in Elazig, Turkey. A total of 500 surveys were sent out and 452 usable surveys were returned. The data about student achievement is taken from the results of a citywide test in Elazig. School scores came from grade 11. Data were analyzed by SPSS program. The data from these schools provided scores on five factors found in the survey. There is a positive relationship between and school culture and student achievement in two factors. In other words, there is a strong relationship between school culture and student achievement. As an important feature of learning organizations it was found teachers value the idea of themselves as learner.
