APPROACHES OF THE COUNCIL MEMBERS OF PROVINCIAL AND MUNICIPAL ABOUT LOCAL GOVERNMENT UNDER EUROPEAN UNION POLICIES: SAMPLE OF HATAY
Abstract :
This study aims to present the perceptions of provincial and municipial council members about the European Union and Turkey’s accession to the EU. To this purpose, provincial and municipal council members were asked to answer questions about Turkey’s accession process such as their support for Turkey’s membership, the results of the Turkish membership, the reforms needed for full membership, the condition of local government in Turkey in light of EU policies and local autonomy. The first part of this study consists of conceptual framework and the history of Turkish accession process. The second part discusses the results of a survey which contains views and tendencies of municipal and provincial council members in Hatay. In the concluding section, the data are analyzed using theoretical approaches and some recommendations and remarks have been made.
