SERVICE LEARNING COURSE AS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR VALUE EDUCATION IN TEACHER EDUCATION
Abstract :
The aim of this study is discussing the value education opportunities of service learning practices course which started to administer by Higher Educational Council at Education Faculties since 2006 -2007 educational year. Service Learning Course objectives include, bringing the preservice teachers in social responsibility consciousness by theoretically and practically. Also the course aims to develop the cooperation, effective communication and self assessment skills during the practices. Service learning course aims to make the preservice teachers precise for regional and universal problems and let them produce solutions. While preservice teachers are producing new projects, they are the active participants. By the way their effective communication skills, self assessment skills and creative thinking skills develop and they interiorize the value concept. The sample of this study were 81 preservice teachers of primary mathematics education who took service learning practices courses at Gazi University, Gazi Faculty of Education in 2010-2011 educational year. Qualitative data were obtained from preservice teachers of mathematics. For this purpose, open ended questions asked to participants in order to answer. The participant’s opinions were collected by their responses.
