Abstract :
The goal of this study is to reveal the importance of the inference skills during the process of reading comprehension which requires multiple skills. Comprehension of the reading text is one of the most important components of a child’s learning skills. It forms a fundamental base for academic success. Comprehension cannot be limited to the information in the text. It necessary to configure, learn and make permanent what has not been clearly stated in the text in order for a qualified learning. Inference is a cognitive process used to structure the meaning. This process during which the individual unites what s/he has newly learnt and what s/he has previously learnt in order to come up with new meanings has an important role in sense-making. The preliminary information possessed by the individual is one of the most important components of inferring skill. If the connection between what has been learnt from the text and the preliminary information is strongly established, the individual can understand the text and remember the information from the text much better. Therefore, inference is an indispensable part of the understanding process. Different practices should be applied to improve this skill from the simplest to the deepest levels of educational activities.
