PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS’ METAPHORICAL PERCEPTIONS TOWARDS BIOLOGY
Abstract :
The purpose of this research is to reveal the metaphoric perception of pre-service teachers’ biology concept. The sample of the research has been comprised of 65 preservice Science and Elementary teachers of in Kafkas University Faculty of Education. This sample included 35 Science and 30 Elementary preservice teachers. The data of the research has been collected through qualitative research method. The pattern of the research has been organized in the case of phenomenology. Content analysis was used for data analysis. The data of the research has been acquired through completing the following sentence for each candidate teachers; Biology is like ........; because ......... According to the results of research pre-service teachers have produced 39 different metaphors concerning biology concept. These metaphors have been united under four conceptual categories in terms of their common qualities. These conceptual categories and frequencies produced by candidate teachers metaphors are as follows: biology content (15), biology function (23), affective features of biology (5), cognitive features of biology (5). In addition, candidate teachers who have been studying in both departments produced six common metaphors have been determined. These metaphors are: Living being, environment, world, life, cell and ocean.
