Abstract :
Academic writing is a genre of writing that students and academicians often use in higher education. It also differs, with many charecterictics, from using of social language as it is different from language’s literal, esthetic usage or the usage we can call as a fiction. Thousands of students, coming from different countries to our country, need to learn Turkish on the level of using while they study for academic education. In this regard, that the development of their academic writing ability is important for foreign students. In this study, foreign students’ need of academic writing is tried to be shown. In this study, supported as a case study that is one of the qualitative researches, a focus group discussion with 22 foreign students is made, written expression of these students is studied. It is interviewed with three instructor lecturing in TÖMER and three academic members lectured to foreign students in academic education and students’ need of academic writing is tried to be shown. The fact that students’ problems of not being able to use qualified title, academic words, problems of word writing, not being able to form inverted sentence, academic sentence, planning, not being able to organize paragraph form. Academic members and TÖMER lecturers state that especially the course of academic writing is a necessity for the foreign students in the first years of university.
