THE IMPROMPTU SPEAKING SKILLS OF 7TH GRADE STUDENTS
Abstract :
Speaking which is the most prominent feature of a human being and which is one of the elements that enable people to become socialized plays an important role in interpersonal communication in the daily life. Speech education must be given weight in order to make an effective communication and to prevent the defects in communication. In this study that was performed in order to identify seventh-grade students’ impromptu speaking skills and ninety-eight students participated in the study. The speeches of the students were recorded and then these records were transcribed. The speeches were evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively. The following situations were encountered during the impromptu speech: not being able to make a sentence according to the structure of Turkish grammar rules, having difficulty in finding appropriate words, repeating words and phrases often, speaking without making a plan and using event-based expressions. In addition, almost all students couldn’t use the three-minute speech time given to them completely. In the evaluation, students’ average scores were 38 out of 100 points. As a result of the research, impromptu speaking skills of the students have been identified as inadequate or partially sufficient. In accordance with the results, recommendations have been offered to curriculum, teachers, schools, and families about the training of impromptu speaking skills.
