Abstract :

Positive or negative attitudes developed as dictionary oriented where words of a language, different meanings and values of use of these words are existing is one of the important factors affecting behavior of dictionary using. Positive or negative behaviors to be developed by students towards dictionaries may affect their behaviors of dictionary using and dictionary using habits depending on the process. A measuring instrument to be developed in order to reveal dictionary oriented attitudes of students shall be useful in determining their attitudes directed towards dictionaries and take necessary precautions. Objective of this research is to improve Dictionary Oriented Attitude Scale and perform validity and reliability analysis. 1160 secondary school student who have education in İzmit compose the sample of this research. In consequence of performed factor analysis 16 items and a measuring instrument consisted of two sub-dimension explaining the % 42,19 of total variance has been achieved. These sub-dimensions are called “habit of using dictionary” and “advantage of dictionary use”. Factor loadings of the scale changes between .45 and .73.Internal consistency coefficient .86 of DOAS (Dictionary Oriented Attitude Scale) have been determined as .83 for the first dimension and .73 for the second dimension. In consequence of material analysis it is observed that material-total score correlation of sub-scales changes between .26 and .61. Depending on these findings we can say that DOAS is a valid and reliable measuring instrument which can be used in schools.
