DISCUSSION OF LANGUAGE SIMPLIFICATION: DEVELOPING ATTITUDE TOWARDS WORDS ORIGINATING FROM ARABIC, PERSIAN AND WESTERN LANGUAGES IN “TURKISH LANGUAGE” MAGAZINE OF 1970
Abstract :
Language is the memory of a nation and the biggest evidence of being a nation. A nation comes into existence in history stage with its language. Every type of change a nation had in historical context appears in the language which is a “changing and developing natural asset, means and a social concern”. Turkish language which we met written samples of it for the first time in Gokturk Epigraphs in the 8th century has changed, developed and became dissimilar in accordance with various reasons. Turkish language encountered many powerful cultures and civilizations throughout history such as Chinese, Indian, Persian, Arabic and Western civilizations and was affected from these. Among these encounters, with the decision of to be involved in western civilization and Islamic civilization being mostly a “civilization change” process, influence of those civilizations became more intense on Turkish language. In our country influence of those two civilizations, Islamic and Western, on our language have been discussed for years under the name of “simplification/being purified” in general and still being discussed as the occasion arises. From this point of view, subject of our study is composed of “authors, developing attitude towards words originating from Arabic, Persian and Western languages” which covered twelve pages of the magazine of Turkish Language in 1970. Objective of this study is to evaluate suggestions and enlighten today by constituting two headings according to the scope of discussions, around “apprehension of conservation” regarding “ongoing Turkish”, with the efforts of “nativisation-purification-refinement” in 1970.
