Abstract :
The purpose of this study is to reveal demographic characteristics of school principals in the U.S.A. and Canada, and to investigate their level of participation in professional development activities. Descriptive statistics of quantitative method were employed in the study. Within the scope of the study, demographic information (gender, age, educational level and experience) of principals and professional activities taken, such as professional development, mentorship, seminar, observation visits and courses, were investigated, drawing upon 2013 Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS) dataset. According to related literature, principal selection criteria in both countries include having teaching experience, master’s degree in educational administration, administrative certificate and participation in certain professional development activities. Consistently, TALIS data showed that most principals in theU.S.A and Canada had a substantial level of teaching experience and frequently participated in professional activities such as, programs and courses about instructional leadership and school administration, network, mentorship, research activities, conferences and school visits for observational purposes.
