Abstract :
Perception of families having a child with disability, is a threat to the continuum of their child’s physical integrity and family life as a lifelong traumatic experience, and is quite stressful circumstance. The objective of this study is to compare families having a child with disability with families who have a child with typically developed in terms of post-traumatic stress symptom and perceived social support level; observe relation between post-traumatic stress and perceived social support; and determine whether variety variables have impact on the post- traumatic stress symptom and perceived social support. The sample of this research is comprised of 832 families, 417 of families having a child with typically developed, 415 of families having a child with disability. Personal information form, Post- traumatic Symptom Scale and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support have been used. It is found that post-traumatic stress symptom levels of families having a child with disability was significantly lower than families who have a typically developed child and there was no significantly difference in between families perceive social support levels. The findings has been discussed and potential areas for future research and practice have been pointed out.
