THE REASONS OF ATHLETES WHO PARTICIPATE IN INTERCOLEGIATE TENNIS COMPETITIONS FOR TAKING UP TENNIS AND THEIR EXPECTATIONS
Abstract :
The aim of this study is to specify why the athletes, who play tennis and try to progress as a professional athlete, start tennis and their expectations from this sport branch. 150 athletes (82 male-68 female) partaking at the 2010-2011 Turkey Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament took part in this study. The frequency percentage and arithmetic average distribution of the data were calculated. The internal consistency reliability coefficient was found to be =0.89. Intervals at the 5 point likert scale were determined with the formula of 4/5=0.80. According to the result of the study, in the list of reasons for athletes tending to tennis sport, family (31.9 %) was found to be the most important reason followed by the desire of being a universally famous athlete (27.2 %), the desire of being a player of national team (%26.5), the effect of athletes they like (25.2 %). On the other hand, when the reasons for athletes in becoming a professional tennis player were examines, it was found out that loving the sport of tennis (44.4 %) was the most important reason, followed by getting pleasure from success (35.8 %) , being healthy by doing sport (33.8 %) and finding happiness in this sport. As for the athletes’ expectations from the sport of tennis, being healthy and keeping health (42.4 %) was the most important expectation followed by having a good physical appearance “(33.1 %), getting a scholarship from foreign universities with the help of tennis “(31.6 %). Within this context, new approaches should be used in developing the athletes’ attitudes about tennis positively and activities which can meet the athletes’ expectations should be organized.
