EXAMINATION OF SELF RESPECT LEVELS OF ADOLESCENT HANDBALL PLAYERS AGED 13-17 IN TERMS OF CERTAIN VARIABLES
Abstract :
The aim of this research is to assess the perceptions about self-esteem of athletes aged 13-17, participating in the Fourth East and Southeast Summer Games Handball Competitions organized in Elazığ in 2009, in terms of socio-demographic characteristics. For this purpose, 100 volunteering male handball players took the self-esteem scale (Rosenberg s Self-Esteem Scale-RSES). The data were analyzed through “Kruskal-Wallis Test and Mann-Whitney U” tests and error rate was considered to be p 0.05. According to the findings of the study; no significant differences were found between the self-esteem levels of the players and independent variables (father s level of education, mother s level of education, monthly family income, parents’ status as confidants and the presence of free time activities). However, it was found that the handball players had high self-esteem levels and it was concluded that sports affected the self-esteem levels of individuals positively. In order to increase the athletes’ self-esteem levels, the elements which raise self-esteem should be determined and these elements should be developed.
