INVESTIGATION OF COMMUNICATION SKILLS OF INDIVIDUALS INVOLVED IN SEARCH AND RESCUE OPERATIONS
Abstract :
The purpose of this study is to analyze the communication skills of individuals who take part in search and rescue missions. The sample of the study consists of 140 members who are in AKUT, a search and rescue association, and who participate in AKUT trainings. The data of the research was collected by using survey technique and Communication Skills Assessment Scale developed by Karagöz and Kösterelioğlu (2008) was used for this purpose. The data collected was analyzed with Statistical package program (SPSS 16.0) and the results were interpreted. One Way Anova and t-test analysis were used to assess research data.Communication skills of the participants, except for the barriers sub-category, were close to good levels. However, a significant difference was not observed in terms of demographic variables. Participants’ levels of education were high and most of them were single. The fact that there was no significant difference between the demographic variables and communication skills suggests a hierarchical structure within the organization. It can be suggested that inclusion of experienced staff in decision making mechanism will provide a more effective process in terms of developing communication.
