Abstract :
Modernization and global communication have reached to the extent of determining the way of life of humankind in many different areas. This fact has affected the perceptions of people from different majors varying from politics to sports. The aim of the research is to determine the point of view of the individuals on the axis of gender. In this study, 15 questions were addressed to 742 people in a questionnaire. The survey, based on Istanbul’s population data, was applied on literate individuals, who were over 20 years old by using quota sampling. Reliability analysis results show that the applied questionnaire is reliable. Regarding the gender that is appropriate for the sports branch, the following data were reached. It is seen that the society has allied that sports branches such as boxing (94%), wrestling (93%) and football (92%), which are based on violence and power, are suitable for men. Only two sports branches where women are dominant are identified, these are Artistic Gymnastics (56%) and Step Aerobic Fitness (69%). There is no dominant gender in sport branches such as Skiing (80,5%), Tennis (78%), Swimming (82,5%) and Table Tennis (74%). It is seen that the society has allied the suitability of these sports branches to both sexes. According to our research, sport branch images were found to be different. This difference is seen in the case of dominant gender in sport branches, too. In this study, it is seen that there is a significant relationship between dominant gender in sport branches and age, gender, education level. As in other studies, we have identified the situation of gender imagery in sport branches. Sports are positioning their image in the society due to the impact of social determinants such as gender.
