INVESTIGATION OF CAUSES AND RESULTS OF VIOLENCE-ORIENTED BEHAVIOURS OF PENALIZED FANS IN SPORTS: THE SAMPLE OF ADANA PROVINCE
Abstract :
Violent actions in Turkey appear mostly in football competitions. The aim of this study is to investigate violence-oriented behaviours of fans who were punished in accordance with the law N. 6222 in football competitions. In this study, which is based on the qualitative model, a purposive sampling technique was used. Research group consists of 10 Adanaspor and Adana Demirspor fans who are at the age ranging from 17 to 24, nine of whom are male, and one is female and who behaved violently in sports areas and were punished accordingly. Semi-structured interview form was used for gathering the data by interview technique. Content analysis was carried out in the analysis of the data. When the fans’ violent behaviours that they were punished for were analysed, it was observed that damaging facilities and officers on duty, entering forbidden zones and sports areas illegally, cheering offensively and inappropriately are the most common issues. It was determined due to punishments they received, fans had problems in family and professional lives. It is revealed that group psychology and insufficient education are the prominent issues in doing violent acts. The determination that the punished fans are regretful for the violent actions show that the punishments are effective. The statements of the fans about their lack of information about the consequential punishment of their actions elucidates the things to be done on this issue. Information seminars for the fans regarding the law N. 6222 can be suggested.
