Abstract
Landfill gas is an end-product of the decomposition of biodegradable wastes in a landfill site. Landfill gas production depends on the waste in place and it changes proportionally by the amount of organic fraction within the waste. Landfill gas has flammable and explosive characteristic in addition to this methane which is mainly exist in the landfill gas also has greenhouse effect that 23 times more powerful than carbon dioxide as greenhouse gas. In order to eliminate these harmful effects of landfill gas , must be collected from the site with proper techniques and destroyed. In this framework, two Landfill Gas to Energy projects have been initiated in the landfill sites both European and Asian Side of Istanbul. 32.000.000 tons of waste in place in Odayeri Landfill Site and the electrical capacity of LFG facility would be 25 MW for the first stage. Similarly, 15.000.000 ton of waste in place in Kömürcüoda Landfill Site and the electrical capacity of LFG facility would be 10 MW for the first stage. Both landfill gas to energy project’s infrastructure have been done and started to generate electricity.
