INVESTIGATION OF TREATABILITY OF LEACHATES COMBINING WITH DOMESTIC WASTEWATER BY ELECTROCOAGULATION PROCESS
Abstract :
Because of its complex structure and high pollutant concentrations, leachate is the leading wastewater that is difficult to be treated. It contains many pollutants particularly organic and nitrogenous compounds, there fore it is not possible to treat with single process. To reduce pollutants in that wastewaters, basic mechanism is the treatment with combinations of various processes. Dissimilar to this treatment, it is possible to treat domestic wastewater and leachate together within only single process. Thus, treatment with only a single process of both high flow domestic wastewater and high strengthleachate can be attained in shorter time. In accordance with this purpose, the results are obtained by operating the reactor at different dilution rate and operation conditions. In the first step, it is investigated if it can be treated at different operation conditions (current density and time of treatment) and various dilution rate of domestic wastewater and leachate (1, 2, 5 and 10%). In consequence of the treatment, while 61% removal of COD of leachate is attained by just 30 minutes treatment, 88% removal of COD of domestic wastewater is attained at same operation conditions. While 55-60% removal (on COD basis) at dilution rates of 1, 2 and 5% s obtained, at 10% dilution rate lower removal rate is obtained. In the light of these datas, it is concluded that, besides its removal rate, dilution rate of 1 and 2% can be used bercause of satisfactory effluent concentration desired for deep sea discharge. By this means, it can be seen that efficient treatment of a wastewater that is difficult to be treated alone can be obtained in a short time by combining with a different wastewater.
